Captain Brett’s Course, in coordination with ASA keelboat 101 standards, will teach you everything you need to know to safely and efficiently handle a 25 foot sailboat in varying kinds of wind and weather conditions. Sailing theory, rigging, points of sail, safety, docking and anchoring, man overboard procedures, and important sailing vocabulary are all covered. Your lessons will take place on a CAL 25, sailing vessel, which is fast and responsive.
All ASA sailing courses are taught on a one on one basis, you will never be pressured to join another group, or placed along with sudden new-comers. This way you can achieve the best learning experience. Most courses take 18 hours over three days as suggested by ASA standards but you can also choose a schedule and time period that fits your needs. Upon successful completion of the course you will be given a ASA certificate that signifies that you can sail on your own. This certificate is recognized by nearly all sailboat charter companies, and world wide charters like Sunsail and Mooring.
ASA Course lessons include all the required points of sailing. With patience and clarity, you will be taught to sail into and away from the wind, to correct rudder and tiller functions, hoist sails, and manage rigging and booms. Important safety factors, such as correctly tying ropes and knots, and understanding all emergency procedures for ‘man overboard’, fire, and water/gas intrusions are gone through carefully. Students will learn the terms and vocabulary necessary to comprehend and act upon the often and quickly changing weather conditions common to sailing. Docking and tying up, especially in adverse or crowded conditions will be practiced, along with guided study leading to passing the necessary exam.
